Meningococcal disease, caused by the bacterial species Neisseria meningitidis, is an infection that primarily attacks the lining of the brain and spinal cord, called meninges. The infection can cause inflammation of the meninges (meningitis) which can lead to severe and often fatal complications. The symptoms can range anywhere between fever, headache, neck stiffness to altered mental state in serious cases.

The disease is preventable by vaccination, which helps the body to fight infection and reduce the possible complications. The vaccine is recommended to be taken by all children and adults, boosted every two to three years, especially before traveling. It is mandatory to get the meningococcal vaccine before traveling for hajj and umrah (Islamic Pilgrimage).

Hepatitis B is an infection that leads to inflammation of the liver, caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It can cause both acute and chronic illness. Severe disease can develop into a long-term, chronic infection, leading to significant, even life-threatening health complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer.

The virus is transferred by contact with an infected person's bodily fluids. Fatigue, a loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, and jaundice are all typical symptoms. Hepatitis B can be prevented with vaccines that can provide up to 98% to 100% protection. The vaccination works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies and help fight hepatitis B virus, preventing serious infection. It is recommended to be taken by all adults, especially if their hepatitis B antigen titre is low, in 3 scheduled doses.

Tetanus is a disease caused by neurotoxin producing bacteria called Clostridium tetani. These
bacteria are found everywhere in the environment, particularly in the soil of warm and moist
areas. The bacteria can get into the body through broken skin, usually through injuries from
contaminated objects such as nails and needles, but it cannot spread from person-to-person. Muscle cramps in the neck, arms, legs, and stomach, as well as intense convulsions that can shatter bones, are symptoms that are commonly seen with tetanus infections.

The tetanus vaccination provides protection against tetanus infections. It is strongly recommended for all adults and children, as per the national vaccination schedule. Booster vaccines are recommended to be taken every 10 years, or when there is risk of exposure to contaminated materials.

Caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection. It is characterized by many itchy, red, blister-like rashes on the skin all over the body, accompanied by fever, lethargy, loss of appetite and headache. The rashes usually last for a week or so, before they turn into patchy scabs. Although chickenpox can affect people of all ages, infants, pregnant women and immunocompromised patients are at particularly high risk of developing serious complications from the disease. The virus can remain inactivated in the body and cause a disease called shingles later in life, which can cause severe rashes and may potentially harm the nervous system.

The chickenpox vaccination carries a small amount of inactivated virus into the body, triggering it to produce antibodies to help fend off infections when the body encounters the virus. They can reduce the chances of getting shingles as well. It is strongly recommended to be taken by children and adults of all ages.

Pneumococcal disease is caused by a bacterial species known as Streptococcus pneumoniae, and can cause a variety of mild to life threatening infections. One of the most common infections that is spread by this bacteria is pneumonia, infection of the lungs. However the bacteria can also cause infection of the bloodstream (leading to bacterial sepsis), meningitis, ear or sinus infection. Symptoms can be aggravated by the presence of other underlying conditions.

Vaccination protects against severe pneumococcal disease and aids the body to produce antibodies to fight infection. The elderly and immunocompromised patients are at particular risk of developing serious complications. The 13 valent vaccine protects against 13 strains of pneumococcal bacteria and is recommended to be taken by all adults and children of all ages. It is usually given in a single dose, however depending on their age, health and prior vaccination status, an additional dose of the 23 valent vaccine might be required sometime later.

The DTP vaccination is a 3-in-1 combination vaccine that protects against 3 diseases:

Diphtheria - a threatening infection that affects the nose, throat, and skin. Symptoms include sore throat, a high temperature, and chills. Breathing difficulties, heart failure, and nerve damage are all possible serious complications. Coughing and sneezing are the most common ways for it to spread.

Tetanus - Often known as lockjaw, tetanus is a dangerous disease that can occur when tetanus-causing bacteria (found in soil) enters a cut in the skin. Muscle cramps in the neck, arms, legs, and stomach, as well as intense convulsions that can shatter bones, are common symptoms.

Pertussis (whooping cough) - a serious illness that affects children in particular. This disease causes intense coughing bouts in children. They may vomit or stop breathing for a brief time as a result of this cough. Coughing can continue weeks, making it difficult to eat, drink, or sometimes breathe. Brain damage, seizures, and death are among potential consequences of pertussis. These issues are especially common in infants. Coughing or sneezing can easily spread pertussis from an infected individual to others.

The vaccine is strongly recommended for children, as per the national vaccination schedule.
