Pneumococcal disease is caused by a bacterial species known as Streptococcus pneumoniae, and can cause a variety of mild to life threatening infections. One of the most common infections that is spread by this bacteria is pneumonia, infection of the lungs. However the bacteria can also cause infection of the bloodstream (leading to bacterial sepsis), meningitis, ear or sinus infection. Symptoms can be aggravated by the presence of other underlying conditions. Vaccination protects against severe pneumococcal disease and aids the body to produce antibodies to fight infection. Babies and young children whose immune systems have not developed fully are at particular risk of developing serious complications.
