Implanon is a contraceptive implant, one of the many long-lasting and reversible contraceptive techniques available. It contains the synthetic hormone etonogestrel, which is produced by a woman's ovaries and is comparable to the hormone progesterone that occurs naturally. This hormone stops the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation), by altering the cervical mucus, and changing the uterine lining. The dimensions of the implant are four centimeters in length by two millimeters in width, roughly the size of a match. It is carefully implanted in aseptic conditions underneath the skin in the upper arm. It can be felt after insertion but is difficult to see. Implanon is a highly effective way of contraception that lasts for 3 years, with effectiveness going over 99%.
