The infection can cause inflammation of the meninges (meningitis) which can lead to severe and often fatal complications. The symptoms can range anywhere between fever, headache, neck stiffness to altered mental state in serious cases. The disease is preventable by vaccination, which helps the body to fight infection and reduce the possible complications. The vaccine is recommended to be taken by all children and adults, boosted every two to three years, especially before traveling.
