Implanon is a contraceptive implant, one of the many long-lasting and reversible contraceptive techniques available. It contains the synthetic hormone etonogestrel, which is produced by a woman's ovaries and is comparable to the hormone progesterone that occurs naturally. This hormone stops the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation), by altering the cervical mucus, and changing  the uterine lining.

The dimensions of the implant are four centimeters in length by two millimeters in width, roughly the size of a match. It is carefully implanted in aseptic conditions underneath the skin in the upper arm. It can be felt after insertion but is difficult to see. Implanon is a highly effective way of contraception that lasts for 3 years, with effectiveness going over 99%. It may however be less effective for some groups of women, such as women with BMI higher than 30.

Implanon Insertion

An IUD is a little T-shaped copper device that is inserted into the uterus. It releases copper to prevent pregnancies, and it lasts between 5 and 10 years, depending on the variety. They can be more than 99% effective when properly implanted and begin working immediately. As long as you're not pregnant, it can be inserted at any point throughout your menstrual cycle.

An IUD works by distributing copper into the womb. Copper changes the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg. It can also prevent a fertilized egg from implanting itself.

The procedure usually lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. The IUD is put via the cervix and into the womb while the vagina is held open with a speculum, similar to a pap smear test. You can opt to receive a local anesthetic to ease the pain or discomfort.

Intrauterine Device (Copper) - IUD

Depo Provera (Medroxyprogesterone acetate) is a hormonal contraceptive drug, which is administered as an injection every 3 months. It contains the reproductive hormone, progestin and helps to control menstrual cycle-related conditions and prevent pregnancy. There are certain advantages of taking this injection as opposed to other methods of contraception, such as:

* Doesn’t need to be taken everyday/very frequently
* Decreases menstrual cramps and pain
* reduces menstrual blood flow and, occasionally, prevents it completely
* reduces the chances of endometrial cancer

Frequency should be greater for women who are at increased risk of HPV infection, such as women who are sexually active of have had a previous pap smear with abnormal results. A Liquid based cytology pap smear can detect changes in your cervical cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. The HPV DNA test detects the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the cervical cells, which is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and the leading cause of cervical cancer. Pap Smear (LBC + HPV DNA)

Implanon is a contraceptive implant, one of the many long-lasting and reversible contraceptive techniques available. A progestin-impregnated tiny plastic rod is inserted beneath the skin on the medial side of the upper arm which inhibits fertilization in a variety of ways.

This procedure relies on the 'pop out' method to remove the Implanon implant. Anesthesia is applied to the skin over the rod's tip, and a 2-mm longitudinal cut is created over one end of the implant, which is viewed and stabilized by pushing on the other end. The rod is pulled out a little, firmly grabbed and cleanly extracted from the surrounding subcutaneous tissue.
