Gaviscon Advance Liquid Sachets are a reflux suppressant containing sodium alginate and potassium bicarbonate as its active ingredients. This higher-strength formulation forms a strong protective raft that sits on top of stomach contents to help prevent acid reflux from reaching the oesophagus. It works rapidly, usually within 3 minutes, and its effect can last for up to 4 hours. Most people tolerate it well, although uncommon side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or abdominal discomfort. It is generally intended for short-term use unless otherwise advised by a doctor. Because it contains sodium and potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have kidney disease, heart disease, or are on a restricted-salt diet. This formulation is generally considered suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed.

For adults and children 12 years and older, the usual dose is 1–2 sachets (10–20mL) after meals and at bedtime, up to a maximum of 4 doses in 24 hours. It is generally not recommended for children under 12 years unless advised by a doctor. Do not continue treatment for more than 7 days without medical advice.
